Nate quickly became drowsy. He remembered reading somewhere that people fell asleep just before they died of exposure, so he tried to fight it. In the end, he decided if he had to freeze to death, it would be better to be asleep than awake. Nate awoke with a start as the plane touched down in the night. They bounced along a bumpy road lit by a searchlight mounted on the front of the plane. As his eyes adjusted to the dark, Nate also saw torches lining the runway. After another minute of bouncing, the plane shuddered to a stop.

Instead, he blinked quite fast. " He pulled a pocket watch from his vest and looked at it. " Nate asked. "Yes. " The lawyer closed his watch with a snap. " he asked. " Nate shut the sketchbook quickly, before the lawyer could recognize himself. "Well, do hurry. It wouldn't do to miss the train. " The lawyer came out from behind his desk and grabbed Nate's suitcase. Nate stood up and tucked his sketchbook under his arm. The lawyer clamped his hand onto Nate's shoulder and steered him out of the office.

Only Miss Lumpton got letters. " "Hmmm," Aunt Phil said with a funny look in her eyes. She shook her head, as if clearing it, then changed the subject. "Nate, would you fish my compass out of my saddlebag there? " Once the sun rose, it didn't take long for the day to heat up. Luckily, they reached the oasis shortly after dawn. There were a number of date palms and a small pool of water surrounded by rocks. Both camels completely ignored the commands to halt and marched straight over to the water.
