Children in the Class One have begun to learn singing from the Tonic-So-Fah [sic] system. November 4th: Another scholar, Arthur Brown, died last evening. Attendance visitor called for absentee list. Miss Dudley late again this morning. Have constantly to remind her that she should be here not later than five to eight and five to two.

Robert Elverstone, 2014 One Early Days, 1872–1878 In the early days following the 1870 Education Act, the Hinckley Board acquired temporary premises in the congregational church. This allowed time for planning and building the new school. U. Frazer, Certificated Master of the Class One. Several members of the School Board were present and Mr Kiddle, Clerk to the Board, attended for the purpose of enrolling pupils. The week was mainly occupied in organising the school and classifying the pupils.

Mistress has taken full charge of Class Two all the week. The children are very dull and inattentive – but are gradually getting into better order. September 29th: Examined Class One today. Notation slightly improved, but still very difficult. Reading very, very backward. The greatest progress has been made in writing. September 30th: Examined Class Two today. Decided improvement in notation and order, but attainments are still very much below what they should be. October 9th: Martha and Mary Smith are away with scarlatina.
